Tuesday's Results

Only one vehicle was required to qualify today, this being the new trike from the Easy Racers team, ridden by Mackie Martin.  This is a front-drive, rear-steer delta confection, with a body shape very reminiscent of the White Lightning of somewhat ancient memory.  However, if my fading memory-brains are to be believed, it became the fastest machine yet on the Muleshoe Road course, clocking around 47 mph.

The next item on the agenda was the display of vehicles in the CivicCenter for the benefit of the pupiles of the High School across the road.  Your intrepid reporter missed most of this, though not for any of the usual reasons involving strong drink and/or loose women, but rather because he was engaged in an ultimately successful quest to transfer pictures from his camera to the Interweb.  I did, however, manage to snap a few photos while everyone else was engaged in investigating the excellent Do-It-Yourself Sandwich-O-Matic.  Click the pic for a high-res version.

The Terrible THING This astonishing device is Al and Alice Krause's Kinetic, er, Device.  Full suspension, turns on a sixpence, steered by the rear rider.  Great fun to crew, especially with Al at the helm.

Condition this evening on Highway 305 were a considerable improvement over yesterday, though it wasn't until the second group of riders were underway that the wind speed dropped to IHPVA-acceptable levels.  Most riders seemed fairly happy with their runs, though Sam Whittingham, travelling rather faster than the others, remarked upon the bumps which seemed to have sprung up since last year.  Hans Wessels, making his first run in the WhiteHawk, reported a rather alarming wobble as he reached the timing traps, while Freddy Markham made his entire run pursued not only by daughter Tanya in the chase car, but also by a member of the Battle Mountain Sherriff's Department, answering an emergency call back in town.  Biggest drama of the day, however, was that undegone by Mackie Martin.  Having successfully cleared the traps, he was almost blinded by the glare of the setting sun, causing him to get the trike into something of a tank-slapper before tipping it onto its side and into the straw bales lining the bridge across the dry Reese river.  The fairing sustained a few minor scrapes, while Mackie himself was unhurt, a testament to the strength of the all-encompassing spaceframe chassis.  He's hoping to run later tomorrow, when the sun has dropped behind the mountains.  Perhaps Gabe de Vault's suggestion for navigation of the machine has some merit; he proposed cutting a hole in the floor to allow navigation by lining up with the centre line of the road...

Hans Hans Wessels touches down after his first run on 305.  Yes, he really is that tall!
Frank Geyer prepare to exit the Big Gun.  His run today was the fastest this machine has ever traveled, in spite of the ventilation flap closing itself at high speed.

Ellen Ellen van Vugt made a determined effort to give Georgi a lift back into town on the prow of the Varnowski, but the catchers managed to stop the bike before things got out of hand.
