2004 WHPSC Saturday Racing Results
and Report
Words and pictures by Dave "FLJS" Larrington.
Those of you who are coming here to view pictures of, and read words
about, happy cyclists cavorting in the sun-drenched deserts of Nevada,
I have News. It is cold, it is windy and it has been raining. No-one
felt in
any way inclined to fall off their expensive toys while slip-sliding
around the high school parking lot. And, as anyone
who was here in 2002 will attest, no-one is too upset that
there won't be any running on 305 tonight. The Rotator guys have
already left and a small army of volunteers have gone out to the course
to bring in the signs
and tidy up the hay bales. Sorry, but we have no control over the
weather. We did contemplate an animal sacrifice last night, but
we weren't entirely sure whether the dog in question was not already a
Weather God in disguise. Things could be worse, though, as snow is
forecast for tomorrow, and it also means that the amount of typing I
have to do is much reduced. Which is important, as the keyboard seems
to have suffered a nervous breakdown since this morning. Bah!
I am aware that communication with the Real World™ has been a tad
patchy, for which I can only apologise and
offer the defence of an InterWeb connection so cheesy it would probably
have been quicker and easier to carve the reports on marble slabs and
send them to Warren via the Pony Express. Next year...
With a bit of luck, there will be some more photos available after
tonight's dinner, but in the meantime, here are some pictures of Larry
"Firestarter" Lem gooning around outside the firework shop.

Don't try this at
home, kids...

Several
people are contemplating turning these into serious multi-rider machines, and
more than one spouse is about to be convinced that errant husbands have
made a down payment on these as plugs for their new fairing...

After which it remains only to thank the riders, team members and
supporting cast, without whom etc. etc. I will not name names,
mostly to disguise the fact that I did not take notes of who was
who. And even bigger thanks are due to the people of Battle
Mountain, who have gone out of their way to help us mess up their
routine. Most notably Jackie and Sarah, the past and present
incumbents at the Chamber of Commerce, and Mary and her crew from the
Nevada Department of Transportation, without whom there could not be an
event at all. Thanks very much, and I hope we'll all be back next
year (Holds up small gold statue, kisses Cameron Diaz, wakes up).
