Fastest One Hour List For Human Powered Vehicles
Complied by Mike Mowett  as of March 3, 2007

The following lists the furthest a human being has traveled in one hour using only human power. The Hour Race is known as the Race of Truth, and is one of the most revered records in cycling.

These are marks by Human Powered Vehicles known to have exceeded the UCI's Absolute Hour Record of 35.03 miles by Chris Boardman set on a "conventional" or un-streamlined, non-recumbent position bicycle. All marks shown below were set on loop courses, meaning an oval with straight-aways and turns or other course where riders rode multiple laps.  These are not straight-line courses, where a strong tail wind could have aided the mark. Vehicles started from a standing start and the rode continuously for 60 minutes. Elevation is measured above sea level.  Most courses are relatively flat courses.

The vehicles used some form of streamlined body totally enclosing the cyclist and frame of the vehicle with one exception - the current UCI record of 35.03 miles set by Chris Boardman. Nearly all vehicles had the rider seated in a "recumbent position," versus the "upright position" of a regular bicycle.  There are a few records set using the "upright position" on the list.

All marks were set as either solo marks, where no drafting of vehicles could be possible, or in events where drafting of other vehicles on the course was forbidden or minimized by spacing between competitors. Usually the most significant aspects of a mark, like if it was a World Record, European Record, National Record, 1st at Championships is listed. Obviously a rider's World Record is also a Continental or National Record and Personal Best, even if its not stated as such for lack of room to list

EXPLANATIONS:
The "current order" column tells how the mark stands relative to the all the past runs as of March 2007.

The "historical mark" column tells where the mark stood relative to all the marks which preceded it.  Hence marks like: # 1 = world record, # 2 = 2nd best ever, # 3 = 3rd best ever, etc are forever recorded as such, even if they move down the "current order" at a later date.

The "Chronological order" column orders the marks according to the data and time they were set.  The list can be downloaded to Microsoft Excel and sorted by this column to show the historical progression of marks.

Abbreviations:
IHPSC = International Human Powered Vehicle Speed Championships, WHPVC = World Human Powered Vehicle Championships

IHPVA = International Human Powered Vehicle Association, HPRA = Human Powered Race America
UCI = Union Cycliste Internationale, BHPC = British Human Powered Club
Abbreviations for vehicle type: RWD = Rear Wheel Drive, FWD = Front Wheel Drive, SWB = Short Wheel Base, LWB = Long Wheel Base

Nationalities: USA = United States of America, CAN = Canada, UK = United Kingdom (Great Britain / England), Swiss = Switzerland, Dutch = Netherlands, GER = Germany, FRA = France, Slovenia = Slovenia

Vehicle Type Descriptions:
◦ Integral Canopy means no head bubble above main body of vehicle, Canopy Bubble means there is a head bubble, perhaps there is a difference in aerodynamics

◦ Low-racer refers to a frame that puts the rider very close to the ground - a recumbent design first raced successfully by Matt Weaver,
◦ Tall & Narrow is a fairing shape that is not a low-racer, it may be more unstable in side-winds than a low-racer.
◦ Mid-sized refers to vehicles that have a "larger" or wider shape than a narrow vehicle.

Rider Description:
◦ national-class means rider could be considered a very strong amateur or professional racer, possibly on national or Olympic team.
◦ Strong amateur is a rider who doesn't necessarily race, but trains hard.  Riders ages included to within +/-1 year when known.

Sometimes vehicles were sold to other riders.  In this case, the original designer of the vehicle is always listed first.  Additional owners who may have made their own modifications to the vehicle are included afterwards and noted as such.
From 1999 to 2006, the $25,000 Dempsey-MacCready prize was offered for the first human powered vehicle to travel 90km in one hour.  Although 90 km was never achieved, this was a huge incentive to the one-hour marks set during that time.
