Manchester Medley HPRA HPV Racing
Pictures
Races held August 6-7, 2005 at
Manchester High School, North Manchester, Indiana. The course was .35
miles in length, roughly rectangular with three 90 degree corners, and
the surface was smooth asphalt with a fresh sealcoat. Thanks to Race
directors Jeff and Jane Hunn, race timer Luke Gilberts, lap counter and
motivator Reena and the Hunn's cadre of volunteers for making it a very
successful racing weekend. Pictures by Rob Cline unless
labeled otherwise |
| Garrie Hill ran his new Trice XXL. This was Garrie's first outing in over a
year after a bout with Achilles Tendonosis. And yes, he still came in last
place!! |

Pat Grant came up from Huntsville, Alabama to race his Trice Micro. Micro
is such an appropriate name....look how much extra room he has in his
minivan! He drove nearly 500 miles each way just for this race. When asked
why he was willing to drive so far, he replied, "I just don't really have a life!" |
| It was a very hot
day. After a long drive from a far off state, an unidentified HPV racer
takes a little nap in the shade. |

69 year old Richard Meyers working on his new-to-him streamliner, the
GeeBee Mini-Moby. He has very successfully reworked the chassis and body
on this 16 year old streamliner and enjoys blowing by racers who are less
than half his age! |
Race director Jeff Hunn had announced that if five trikes showed up to race,
he would set a trike class for the races. Here we see Gene Metcalf's much
modified WindCheetah HyperSport and virgin racer Mark McPhail's Greenspeed GT3. As a side note, both Mark and Gene are PhD's. Is there a
cause and effect relationship here? Dunno!

Rick Gritters
races his Dacron covered streamliner in the 60 lap first race on
Saturday. Speeds were kept low by the tight corners on the .35 mile
cours aroung the North Manchester high school. Rick's stock class
average speed was actually 4MPH higher than the streamliner average, due
to the extreme lean angle equired to traverse the corners at high
speeds. |
| Rich Myers stops
on the front straightaway to make some adjustments. Rich raced the full
streamliner in all the races, despite the oppressive temperatures. |

 |
Doc Pearson races
his Coroplast streamliner in the 60 lap race. Doc added a longer tail to
the bike for this race, and was significantly faster. He was only 1 lap
done from Rich Myers at the end of the first race. |
| Rich Meyers
gets the 'liner up to speed up the front straightaway. |
 |
 |
Frank Lindley
races his Infinity Banshee SWB FWD Coroliner in the SuperStreet class. |
| Dave Balfour
races Patrick Grant's faired TriSled, which did a very good job of
preventing Dave from making a repeat of last year's roadrash experience. |
 |
 |
Warren Beauchamp
races the new Cuda-W for the first time. Yes, it goes pretty well,
straight anyway. Warren had problems with the crank to wheel hard
interference on a couple turns which caused some crashes. He did
learn that the bike bounces over 6" high curbs very easily, while
sliding backwards on it's side... |
| Warren shows his wounds after crash testing the new Cuda W. What does
that say on his jersey? |

Unfaired classed
racers line up for the second race of the day, a 45 lap criteriun race.
Winners of this race, and the 60 lap faired class race will receive an
HPVA criterium champion armband. |
| Stock racers
blast away from the start line. Patrick Grant gets the hole-shot and
pulls out to take an early lead. |
 |
 |
Gene Metcalf
races his Windcheetah HyperSport. Yes, the flames DO make him go
faster!! |
| First time HPRA
racer Mark McPhail races his Greenspeed GT3. Mark crashed in corner
1 during the first race, and opted out of the remaining races. |
 |
 |
Wendy Toy raced
her Brick custom low racer. |
| Later in the
race, trike racers (R to L) Garrie Hill, Gene Metcalf, and Mark
McPhail take corner 3 at speed. |

dives into corner 1 on his Gritters lowracer, followed by Dennis Grelk
on a Jester, and Warren Beauchamp on a NoCom. |

Charlie Ollinger
raced Garrie Hill's M5 lowracer. Charlie father, Thom, built special
seat braces to allow 14 year old Chalie to slide the seat Waaay
forward. |

by the start/finish line, followed by Jan Hunn. |

 |
Warren Beauchamp
looks like he's working hard. The rather distended looking stomach is
due to a camelback under the shirt. |
| Trikers Garrie and Mark
are followed around corner 3 by LowRacer Dennis. |
 |
 |
Jane Hunn
races her Sunset lowracer. You can't tell from this picture, but her
jersey matches her husband Jeff's. |
| Dennis Grelk sets
up for a corner on a Chaalenge Jester. After racing and improving all
season, Dennis is really getting his 'bent legs now! |

Dennis Grelk has been racing
Garrie Hill's Challenge Jester in our HPRA events this year with increasing
success. Here is the bike parked next to Dave Balfour's fwd carbon
lowracer.
|
Unfortunately, Dennis learned
just exactly how fast the first 90 degree corner can't be run! He slid
off the track and crashed the front wheel into a gate post. Why is
everyone smiling in this picture?

Actually, this Katana fork was
very well designed and built. It collapsed thus absorbing much of the
energy of the collision. Notice that not a single
weld cracked! The bike frame is unscathed.
|
Here's the culprit corner with
the arrow pointing to the post. Notice how much the two streamliners are
leaning as they enter the corner.

| Rick Gritters
cruises into a corner on his tiny lowracer, Dave Balfour follows on his
Catrike Road.
Both Rick and Warren raced in stock and
faired classes, racing in 6 races on Saturday. Rick and Warren both had
an upset stomach later in the evening due to the effects of the
extremely hot day, and felt toasted for several days after the races.

another hot day. Here, Gary and Wendy hang out in the shade and recover

Joe Brooks and
Tess Machlan race their custom Brick Tandem.
The lap races Sunday were raced in the
opposite direction from Saturday's races, just to make it interesting.
For some reason or other, right turns seem faster... |
| Jeff and Jane
Hunn race their Nirvana Tandem lowracer. The bike has been tweaked for
this year with a remote steering assembly, and is really running well.
Jeff is planning the addition of a body sometime. |

ceremony. Dennis and Warren talk about bike stuff. |

packaging... |
