Indy 2003 Race Report

Weather was great both days, with a slight breeze and temperatures in the 70s, so conditions were excellent for fast times. Saturday's racing was on the 333 meter Major Taylor Velodrome.  First the 200 meter flying sprints were held, then 3 separate "lap" races. The first was a 20 lap race for tandem and junior classes, then a  50 lap races for women and stock classes, then another 50 lap race for the faired classes. The old HPVA timing system was used to count the laps, and worked quite well, besides the usual anomalies.  I flatted out on my lap race, arg! On Sunday we raced at the Mooresville park, on a road course that was a couple hundred feet short of a mile in length. This course has a nice selection of descents, curves and up-hill grind.  The first race was the Outlaw drags, which Karsten Fabian won. After that was the lap races, which were broken up into two races, one for unfaired classes, and the other for faired classes. I

Guys,
Just back from Indy. We really missed Frank Geyer. But it was a good time. See the pic of Sean Costin in the "practical" Cos I (pictures soon!). It's (not surprisingly) awesome. It's easy to ride, very fast, and handles great. Man, was I envious of Sean. Sean has the fine idea of adding landing gear. But if it were me, I'd also cut and trim in a hatch so you wouldn't have to take the whole top on and off. Make it fit tight and it won't slow it down. Then Sean could handle it by himself, and it would RULE! Another Team Coslinger member Richard Myers had a good outing. Despite his new liner body missing it's bottom half, it seemed to work well. Of course Rich logs more liner miles annually than anyone. Richard should do very well at Calvin's 12 our Challenge next week. As will Frank in his new liner. As for me, it was a sorry display of recumbent racing. Noting my lack of early season fitness, I hoped to do well in the flying 200 meter sprint. Unfortunately, during my huge sprint attempt, I bobbed a bit, and went under the inner white line (very scary). Thereby DQing myself. Boy was I pissed, whereby I hoped to take out my displeasure on Garrie Hill. Unfortunately, he was up in the timing tower and I couldn't get to him. When oxygen returned to my brain I realized it was (obviously) my own fault. I tried a 2nd sprint, but there was no ATP left to fuel my legs. Luckily, Rick Gritters timed my first 200 meter attempt. Despite my bobble, my unofficial time was 13.14, which was very close to Rick's 2nd place time in stock class behind Karsten Fabian's 12.something. I think only Sean went faster out of everyone. Chain trouble and weak legs led to a poor performance in the 50 lap race. Luckily, I felt better on Sunday. My boom flexes so bad that I couldn't keep my chain on during the drag races. But, I rode well in the road race, battling (unsuccessfully) with Bill Lozowski to the line for 5th place (I think). As my fitness improves during the summer, I should do much better. After slaughtering everyone at the velodrome, Sean had a tougher time at Pioneer Park. A poorly install top of the body required Sean to stop after the 2nd lap for an adjustment to eliminate tire rubbage. Whereby Sean started passing everyone like he had an engine. It looked like he would "unlap" himself and possibly win the race,when all the sudden some of his leg flesh got sucked into the space between the fender and front tire. This (for some reason?) caused him to jerk the steering, which resulted in him going uneventfully off course for an emergency landing. It was over for Sean, as there is no way for him to get back up and going. However, it sure was great seeing Sean and the Cos I burning up the road course. Richard did as well as could be expected with his 1/2 finished fairing. A fine workout before C12C.
BTW, our webmaster Warren Beauchamp had a fine outing both days, easily running in 2nd place in super stock behind Alan Ariail in all the races.
