Please read this whole page to understand how the lists work before asking questions. We have yet to run across a list-related question that is not answered below.

The heart of MARS -- discussion!
Since we're so widely scattered, we've found that the best way to keep in touch is through a mailing list. The daily stream of messages has proven to be enlightening, refreshing, inspiring and sometimes humorous, but always indispensible.

The mailing list is what makes MARS so successful. The list is how we organize upcoming rides, how we pass news along and how we run the club. You don't have to read the list messages if you're in MARS, but if you don't you'll miss out on, well, just about everything we do!

Well, TWO lists, really...
MARS actually has two mailing lists. The main list is for wide-open discussion of anything... rides, bikes, techniques, events... as long as it's somewhat related to recumbency.

This list has a lot of traffic, though. So much that many users have left the list because of the overwhelming volume. So, for the convenience of those who just want to find out about the next ride, we've set up a separate, moderated, low-volume ride-announcement only list.

Here's how it works: Anyone can join either list, but it's not necessary to join both. The moderator will monitor main list postings and cross-post the pertinent ones to the ride announce list.

Everything that appears on the ride-announce list automatically gets sent to the main list. So those who are already on the main list do not need to subscribe to the ride-announce list. You can if you want to, though.

Which one do I subscribe to?
The main list is for discussion of everything, including rides. The ride-announce list is for ride messages only, and the moderator manually picks up pertinent messages from the main list.

- If you want it all, subscribe to the main list.
- If you want the discussion filtered out, subscribe to the ride-announce list.

If you have any questions about how this works, email Joao de Souza or Andrew Douglas.

The main MARS list (aka BENT)
Please read this entire section before asking questions about the list!

- To subscribe, unsubscribe, change your list settings or access the mailing list archives via the Web --
Easy: just visit the BENT mailing list management page by clicking HERE.

This page is where you control the way the list behaves for you (including how messsages are delivered, e.g. in digest form or one at a time). It should be self-explanatory... but if you still can't figure it out, email the Webmaster, Joao de Souza, at cyclinglemur@gmail.com.

To post messages (after you subscribe)
-- Send them to bent@list.marsride.org

About the main list server --The MARS mailing list, like all mailing lists, is not maintaned by a human. It's all robots. So to control it, you, the subscriber, need to send a specific message to the robot that it will understand. We cannot do it for you.

There are now four ways to access the main MARS list:
- Conventional subscription (you get every message sent to the list in your email)
- Digest mode subscription (you get only one email a day, with all of that day's messages in it)
- Index mode subscription (you get only one email a day, with just the subject lines of the messages... you can then pick and choose which ones to retrieve)
- Access the list via the Web (you get no emails, but you do have to go to the mailing list archive web pages)

The ride-announce list (aka Recumbent Ride)
The ride-announce list works a little differently. There's no digest mode, nor is one needed. It's also moderated, so all postings go to a human first, before appearing. It's for announcements only. If you want to have a conversation, use the main list.

The fact that it's filtered by a human (a volunteer club member, not the webmaster) means that there is no guarantee that the information on this list is current. The main list is the only place that is guaranteed to have all current information.

Remember, everything on this list also gets posted on the main list! Also, rides posted to the main list may (if and only if the moderator is watching the main list) show up here.
