I want to inform all my friends that I have prostate cancer and I start radiation treatments today. The cancer has not spread and my outlook is good for complete recovery. I probably will not be racing the rest of the year and I hope to be back next year.
The media has done us a disservice by telling us the PSA test should not be used as prostate cancer is slow growing and the treatment is worse then the cancer. This is only true if you are in bad health and at the end of your life. So do not skip the yearly blood test like I did as I believed there information. The biopsy is uncomfortable but it showed I did have cancer. After my intense radiation treatment the doctors expect I will be cancer free and have a good chance of living and RACING many more years.

My neighbor had to go and get zapped on a regular basis two years ago, he is fine now, he's 81.

Richard, I'll be thinking of you. I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2003 at age 52. Besides being severe, it was also growing rapidly and necessitated a relatively quick prostatectomy and removal of some other precious bits. Fast forward 6 years to 2009 and the cancer returned necessitating 82 radiation treatments and anti-hormone therapy.

Both were found by a high velocity PSA and the first confirmed by biopsy.

Good luck and hang in there.

WOW you had it ruff. I had my 1 treatment today and will have 4 more treatments 1 hour long apiece using intense radiation delivered from the robotic controlled CYBERKNIFE. I am scheduled for 6 months to 2 years of anti-hormone therapy. Good luck to both of us.

I had 50 treatments of broad radiation 360* to my abdomen and then 32 focused to my prostate bed. My PSA has been less than 0.006 since I completed treatments in May 2009.

I feel for you on the hormone treatments. I suffered hot flashes and severe weight gain (30#) which I havent lost. Hopefully, you'll be one of the lucky guys that gets by with few side effects from the drugs. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

Sorry to hear this Richard. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts. Hopefully you will feel well enough to come and hang out at the races that are close enough. It just won't seem right if you are not there. Hoping for speedy recovery for you!

Thanks for all the prayers and thought. After 5 days of radiation treatments I am tired. In 3 months I will have another PSA test to see if they got it all. Now I start rebuilding.
