Hi Mike,

I've been told that they are working off of a long waiting list (and I'm fairly far down on the list).

A couple years ago I stayed at the Battle Mountain Inn & Suites, on the north end of town. Decent enough, but it ain't the Super 8.

The Battle Mountain Inn (or whatever it was called 12 years ago) was the official motel of the WHPSC at the outset of the event. It was fine. The Comfort Inn (now America's Best) replaced that for a few year and it was fine. But now the official motel the Super 8, the event has grown, and we wish the Super 8 had 20 more rooms...

I stayed at the Battle Mountain Inn - it was nice and right next store to a nice restaurant / truck stop.

I stayed at the Big Chief, and to me the parking lot always felt crowded, lots of traffic circling around it due to its layout. A pool is in the middle of the lot. I wouldn't feel the best about working on my bicycle out there and walking inside or upstairs and leaving equipment out there in the lot unattended. Damjan had his bike up on the 2nd floor balcony and then even the first floor roof when we stayed there, which wasn't bad because we had rooms at the end of the hall.

The first year I went to the WHPSC in 2003 I stayed at the Battle Mountain Inn in a corner room way on the end. Nice and cheap and surprisingly quiet. I couldn't have cared about much else than it having a bed, fridge and bathroom. They have 4 rooms available right now starting at $50 per night for the week. And there is room behind the hotel to work on bikes in the parking lot if you plan on doing some of that.

Mark.

Does anyone know of any camping areas close-ish to the course? I'm new to this, and I've just started designing my first bike. I'm wanting to come out and maybe volunteer. I have to see if it's feasible first.

Violan5,
I have heard there is camping on BLM property in the hills above the course. Contact Dreamer for more information on this as I believe he and his family had camped there during the races for the last couple years. He could give you more info.By the way, we all love volunteers.

Violan5,

There is a free primitive campground with around a dozen camp spots about 4 miles from the starting area. It's unimproved except for well maintained outhouses but we camped there for the entire week 2 years ago. The campground is next to tall cottonwoods lining the banks of a small creek. There is some shade and it's quiet and comfortable if you like to dry camp. The campground doesn't have drinking water and cell phone service wasn't available in camp.

Who would I talk to about getting a ride from the airport in Portland to Battle Mountain? I'm just wanting to tag along and help with the event.

Josh, I'm planning on attending and perhaps crewing for a friend of mine from Portland. I live about 10 minutes away from PDX airport. Plans are still gelling, though. You might want to sign up and post a note in the OHPV forum: http://www.ohpv.org/forums/ under "Racing", I think.

I'm so sorry. I meant to say the airport in Reno. I was just thinking about Portland for some reason. I'm losing it.

You're posting here. That means you've lost it and any compound interest you thought you earned.

word from battle mountain is that town is booming, gold is high and they are opening another mine operation in the area, competition for rooms isn't just with our group. trying to get a better feel for how things are going there, keep you posted...

Will this cause any changes in scheduling the periods that we can close 305 in the morning and/or evening ?

boom time Battle Mountain will only cause competition for motel rooms and maybe restaurant tables, none of this expansion will change our schedule.
