Hans Van Vugt is putting on another race record weekend at the Apeldoorn indoor velodrome on Oct 29 and 30. Very likely, some records will fall. This is a spectacular facility!! Anyone going?

Just as important: Is anyone interested in adding some $$ to my sponsorship for putting on the event?

Here are some pics I took at the event two years ago:

I'll be there as part of the crowd. Sneaking into the midfield. And Apeldoorn is only 110km or so from my place, so it'll be a good ride too.

Well, cheez, Mike! Ask him yourself ;-> ..... His e-mail is listed above. Don't look for an answer for the next few days, since he is at EuroBike.

I spoke with Gert-Jan at Battle Mountain and he doesn't think he'll be participating as he doesn't have a competitive bike to ride. He is more of a rider than tinkerer, so he just rides, he doesn't screw with bikes. But he has somewhere between 300 and 400W threshold power, was the former hour record holder, and would be right in the mix if he were to race. Appledorn is an hour away from where he lives and he said he'd probably ride his bike there to watch.

I found this to be very puzzling. I train my guts out (well, not that hard really) to achieve half his power. If I had 300+W, I'd be kicking butt at every TT event that I entered. I'd even consider flying there to attack the hour if I had that amount of power. Life is strange.

I suspect he doesn't want to show up with a knife at a gun fight. I don't blame him.

Larry,
I wonder why David Wielemaker a leader of the VeloX team, and holder of the men's stock kilometer world record on a M5 carbon lowracer, did not ride the VeloX in Battle Mountain. He broke Sean Costin's kilometer record in Apeldoorn last year and also had a good sprint speed in the 200-meters. He obviously has some good power. I would have expected at least a trial run in the VeloX for him, unless the team strategy was to focus on Gert-Jan (he was formerly marked as just an Hour driver with Pieter Hollebrandse on the team's website) and Sebastiaan as its principal drivers. Whatever their strategy, it worked, and they are now the 2nd fastest in the world.

A list I made... the old record by Francis Faure has been surpassed a few times now.

Also added in some famous UPRIGHT marks to see where the best recumbent stock performances stand compared to them. I thought it might be interesting to note that today's best one-hour unfaired recumbent performances exceed that of the best UCI traditional uprights, as well as some of the first famous record of Moser and Obree

Hi Larry,

The last measurement at the VU Amsterdam (who took care of the rider side of the HPT Delft team) power at FT was 400 Watt at 149 bpm (+25 Watt / min. protocol). Since this is a pretty steep protocol I dont think I will hold 400 Watt for an hour. I guess it wil be around 350 watt at the moment.
But it is like you say I dont like fiddeling with bikes. At the moment I have no bike to ride the Apeldoorn contest.

I dont think I would be showing up with a knife at a gunfight. I am sure I can do better than the 51.3 kmh of 2009. At that event I had, I guess, the least aero setup. And the run was probably (to) smooth. I think the current record is within reach.

This day I had a beautiful 4 hours ride, that is what I like most about cycling!

Thank you for bugging me Larry! It was nice to meet you at BM.

I will be saddened if Gert-Jan does not attempt the unfaired hour again. No offense to Mr. Bonneteau, I think Gert-Jan is the best hour athlete in Recumbent cycling and like me, he is not getting any younger.

Oooo, I wish I was there this weekend to watch the fireworks! Even if such an event is akin to watching paint dry for an hour. Knowing the pain the riders are enduring is....fun.

MM, I think Sean's best performance should be listed as 10th since there is a tie for 8th. Others should move down accordingly.

Also, the list seems to be missing the "UCI best human efforts" between 1994 and 1996. Maybe your were just listing a few records. But then perhaps swap Obree's '94 record with Boardman's faster '96 record in the table.

Disparagingly, when some upright world championship-type event was held at Apeldoorn 6 months ago (broadcast on NBC Universal Sports), the commentators mentioned that it wasn't a very fast velodrome due to the straight-to-curve transitions, that Manchester was much faster, and that this was why everyone's times were relatively slow (at Apeldoorn). Still, a great opportunity and no where to go but up!

I've heard that Apeldoorn is not too fast. But at the same time, Aurélien did Bordeaux just a few weeks after setting his recored and was slower. The banking is really high making it great for 200. I think a better hour track would be less oval and more round.

Kudos to Warren who built a new timing system for this and future events in Europe that will make it possible to get sprint times to the thousands of a second based on timing tapes instead of optical and AMB antenna loops.

Best of luck to all the racers.

Hi Larry,
I was just trying to put the next faster target (Obree's mark) on the list for Aurelien or Pieter to try and reach. Boardman's 35.03 miles 56.375 km remains the ultimate prize for unfaired human powered vehicles. I agree with the 8t + 8t = Sean 10th.

...... And it has begun. I'm sitting in Detroit airport waiting for another four hours before I can board a plane for Amsterdam. I'll then leave at 7:30 pm EDT and fly through the night, arriving in Amsterdam tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 9:00 am local time ( 3:00 am EDT!!).

Ordinarily, such a layover would entail numerous laps around the airport concourse, reading a few books I would carry along, and not having a Real Good Time TM. But now, through the wonders of modern technology, and a largish dent in my wallet, I can mess about on the Net, read something from the library of 400 or so books I have stored in the cloud, do a bit of CAD work on the new carbon fairing ...... or, heaven fore fend, get some actual revenue producing work done!!! New MacBook Air.

In the mean time, here's a video from where I'm sitting in the airport. Kinda' reminds me of the Contemporary Resort Grand Concourse at Disney World!

Garrie,
no need for work! Come on over to my house or John's house or Rick's house for an hour or two - we'll play with bikes! Well, then again the only thing I can guarantee about Detroit is that you'll most likely spend that time in a traffic jam about this time of day.

Just back from the track the new bikes are doing well, Ellen was cruising around at 40 km/h but big suprise Janneke was doing laps in the high 46 km/h (still with standard wheels no disks).
It looks like some records will be set this weekend.
Also the team from Italy showed up. only 34 hours to go for it starts.
Tomorrow some pictures of the new bike will be at www.elan.cc.
Greetings Hans van Vugt

Phew,

I'm still working on the last few things for the event. I spent a few hours staring at my PC screen this morning in an attempt to write up a nice teaser for all website visitors.
The only result was that one photo (sorry Hans, I though it would be nice to give the real premiere of a view of the bike to those visiting Apeldoorn). Meanwhile I prepared some things for tomorrow making my reporting much smoother than last year it will still be a tricky task to divide between reporting results, photographing, selecting photos and publishing this all.

Jörg Basler (DropLimits.de) will also be there. We will do our best to keep everyone up to date with all latest results and pictures.

Regards,

Rob

Well, we've started. Pieter Hollenbrandse. He was averaging around 32 mph; but he quit with only five minutes to go! Have to find out what happened.

Pictures and such will have to wait since we don't appear to have the wifi link I paid for this morning. :-(
