AMAZING TIMES for da COSTINATOR. Thanks Garrie for these updates!!
It looks like its been well worth the trip over there!

Sean's Kilometer Record 1:04.007 is faster than these USA national marks for the age groups listed. Sean is 44 years old, hence would be in the 40+

USA Cycling Records:
1 km
30+ 1:04.271 Jeff Solt, Colo. Springs, CO, 7/13/93
35+ 1:04.927 Anton Quist,Colo. Springs, CO 8/4/04
40+ 1:05.063 Roy Simonson, Colo. Springs, CO 8/24/00
45+ 1:07.85 Vic Copeland, Colo. Springs, CO, 8/21/93

Sean's 10.728 seconds = 67.114 kph = 41.703 mph seconds makes him only slighty slower than these USA national marks for the age 30-45 groups listed.

USA Cycling Records:
200 meters
30+ 10.333 Stephen Alfred, Colo. Springs, CO 8/6/02
35+ 10.598 Stephen Alfred,Colo. Springs, CO 8/4/04
40+ 10.511 Stephen Hill, Colo.Springs, CO 8/9/06

Congratulations BARBARA!

A historical perspective: Barbara is faster than the current UCI women's mark, set using a classic drop handlebar (not an aerobar bike). Like the marks of Gert-Jan and Aurélien for the men, she has conclusively proven that the recumbent bicycle is faster than the best most highly trained UCI riders on classic UCI bikes, but so far no recumbent riders have taken over the absolute UCI marks, set using aerobars.

Women's Record One-Hours (no streamlining added)
Kph, Mph, Rider, Date, Location, Record
48.159, 29.925, Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Fra), 26.10.1996, Mexico (Mex), Aerobars, High-Altitude, UCI Absolute Record
47.411, 29.460, Yvonne Mcgregor (Gbr), 17.06.1995, Manchester (Gbr), Aerobars, Low-Altitude
47.112, 29.274, Catherine Marsal (Fra), 29.04.1995, Bordeaux (Fra), Aerobars, Low-Altitude
46.352, 28.802, Jeannie Longo (Fra), 01.10.1989, Mexico (Mex), Aerobars, High-Altitude
46.163, 28.684, Barbara Buatois (Fra) 17.10.2009, Apeldoorn, Recumbent, no aero additions, low-altitude.
45.094, 28.020, Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Fra), 07.12.2000, Mexico (Mex), UCI Classic Bike – Now the Official Record

Mike;
Julius says to look at the UCI website and recheck the woman's record. He says that there is a Dutch woman that you don't have. Doesn't know the name.

Hi Garrie! I found it - Julius was correct. I was looking only in their historical records section which provides much more records...

Current Women's One Hour (Classic) Record - using drop handlebars like Eddy Merckx in 1972, no aero bars.
46km065 LEONTIEN ZIJLAARD-VAN MOORSEL (NED) 01.10.2003 MEXICO (MEX)

Barbara, 46.163 km, is still faster, by less than 100 meters (98 meters to be exact)!!

I really wondered about Sean doing three events in one day. After setting two new records, it looks as if he is done. He is just rolling in now after about 15 minutes. Perhaps tomorrow.

Well folks, we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. It's 8:30 pm here, and my wife is giving me "meaningful glances". No, not that kind!! She is telling me it is time for dinner

Ohhh, it was great fun. Plus, I got to talk with several people I've only corresponded via e-mail before. It just confirms what I've said since I first got involved in HPV's some thirty years ago, when I first talked with Gardner Martin. 'Benteurs are some of the most genuinely nice people on this planet ........ and believe me, I've met my share!

Speaking of meeting great folks, tomorrow Lesley and I have breakfast set up with Barbara and Julius.

Also, Sean retries the hour tomorrow at 10:00 am Amsterdam time. See you then.

46.163 km/hr = 28.62 mph. Holy @$?#*!!!!!!!!!

A few of us were theorizing the other day as to just how strong Barbara was. We know she kicks butt at the recumbent events in Europe, but wanted to see her run a "std event" on a "std bike".

I guess that does it. Now we can make ever-more-accurate guesses about her lactate threshold power.

She is quite special.

Day Two at Apeldoorn

Sean gets the opportunity for another try at the hour, this morning at 10:00 am. I can't believe I'm the first one here! Several racers left their bikes here in the infield last night.

Hans and Ellen van Vugt, Thomas and Sean have showed up. Here is a familiar picture of Hans..... always working on someone's bike. In this case, putting a new tire and gearing cluster for Sean.

Thomas looks a little puzzled..... well it's still early.

A case of the race jitters? No, Sean. You have to put the bike down on the track before starting!

Obligitory starting pictures and then he's off.

10:00 am, and he's on his way. His first three laps, gradually building up to speed......cruising at 48...... now 49! OK, he's settling in to 48 and a fraction.

Fifteen minutes in ....... Sean is struggling ..... several laps down at 45.

20 minutes in ....... He increases his speed for a lap, then drops off a little. Up, down, up, down. He is not looking like a happy camper :-(

30 minutes and he is throwing in the towel.

Nils vd Wal is 40 minutes into his hour. Boy is he cooking along! So far his average is 51.492 Riding the M5 carbon midracer. Bram says that this bike is potentially caster than his lowracers. maybe not as fast as the 559/700 TiCa.
