Forecast is rain & 61 degrees, rest of the week 68-70.
Hey, I can always count on a slow TT, so no rush on that account. ;-)

Mike, Good Luck to you and Thom, if you guys decide to go!

No excuses Pete! Just get out there and ride it! There's nothing like an early season slow TT to set a time to improve on later. There's a Colavita-Zipp TT this weekend that Thom Ollinger and I might do - but the weather forecast is windy, cold 41 deg and rain. It sucks to live in the midwest! At least out there I hope you're having better weather!

Upright Dave,

It is a fairly narrow, two lane road. Just wide enough for a recumbent, like a Bacchetta Corsa, to do a 180, but too narrow for a velomobile, which requires going back and forth a couple of times. The sides are packed dirt, so if one swings wide, it's not that bad. However, the edge of the asphalt is somewhat sharp and sticks up a bit, so if you hit it the wrong way with a sidewall, you can blow-out a tire. There is sparse traffic and at the 180 there is a person, who will stop any oncoming cars, if you just happen to be making a turn. At the start they have a Hwy Patrol cruiser with flashing lights to keep crazies at bay. The race is free of charge and informal. Winning DF speeds are typically in the 29+ mph range. For recumbents, the fast time is currently held by Greg Thomas in a Quest at 33.58 mph.

I was looking at the satellite map of that run. The margins on the street look pretty narrow. Like maybe 4 inches? Is there traffic?

There is also the Folsom Canal TT that starts on Tuesday, March 12th at 6pm and every other week after that. The race is free and they maintain results on their website.

Latest news is to look out for an announcemnt sometime in April. There is an event in March that would be great for recumbents

I bet the organizer would add a recumbent category if he could get a wad of entries.

Just talked to Tom at Davis Wheelworks. He says the TT will continue as normal this year. They will begin sometime near the time change and as usual be held about every other Wednesday.

Putah Creek TT's have been happening for over 30 years, that I know of. I imagine some other Davis local will pick it up if the old guard is really moving on.

I had a funny feeling when they didn't post the results of the last TT and the website changed. Well, there's always the Folsom Canal TT. It won't be as fast as Putah Creek but it sure beats having do drive 400 and 500 miles one way to do a TT. The schedule is up for this year's Folsom TT series. What's really nice is that you don't have to worry about traffic at all.

I wonder if it will be happening in 2013 now that Cody doesnt work there anymore. Him and his dad were mainstays of the event.

Anyone know if they ever posted the final race results?

randy Posted - 10/06/2012 : 09:05:06
I'm getting the XS. It was supposed to be here in mid-September but they're running behind this summer. It's going to be great for training through the winter. I'm going to need to be in shape if I'm going to compete next year at Ba... oh wait, forget I said that.
Speedbiker Posted - 10/06/2012 : 08:26:17
And soon one will have Gillette power! Which one are you getting, Randy?
randy Posted - 10/06/2012 : 07:06:34
And the Quest doesn't have a mid-drive.
randy Posted - 10/06/2012 : 07:05:34
The Quest has enclosed front wheels and a larger back wheel. Also, the sides are smooth as opposed to the indented sides on the Mango. The Quest has a longer and pointier tail.

I still wonder what sets the Quest apart from other velomobiles. What characteristics make it so fast?

Racing Greg's Quest was awesome! I didn't expect it to be that much faster than my Mango, but the difference was pretty big, especially at the top end. Where my Mango's maximum was 31.1 mph, the Quest was more like 34.3! As a result, I set a new P.B. of 21:30 (27.91 mph). With more acclimatization I think I could go faster. Now I want a Quest...

Here is a link to to my race info:

Greg did a similar time to his last race on the Fujin, within a second, or two, a bit over 28 mph (he started his GPS a few seconds early):

Well, I lowered my seat angle 20 degrees and reshaped the tailfairing accordingly and managed to go slower. I know I lose power in the open position but c'mon. Oh well, back to the closed position. Luckily, I know how to get even more leverage and better breathing with proper tweaking of the seat when I go back. I need to nip this disturbing trend in the bud.

I'll have a new weapon for May 2013. If you guys show up, it'll be a real hoot!

I'm going for the triple crown next May :-) If Greg shows up I predict one of us will end up rolled over on the beach in our attempt to best one another. What a fun course that will be for a velo.
Zyzio Posted - 10/01/2012 : 16:09:19
Good luck Larry & Tom!

Fiesta Island would be an ideal place for a velomobile TT, maybe next May we can get a few velos and recumbents together for another "Fiesta Island Assault". Perhaps someone could break the record(s). Dean got within one second of the fully faired record in his Coyote a few years ago and Randy Gillett still has the unfaired and tail-faired records.

Larry Lem Posted - 10/01/2012 : 12:26:58
We have the Piru TT this Sun, and Fiesta Island the next. I'm going to try 135 mm cranks on my dual 650C. (dropping from 150 mm)
